Groundwater retention screen helps the fen orchid

Did you know that the port on the left bank of the Scheldt is one of the few places in Flanders where the fen orchid – one of Europe's rarest orchids – grows? The little plant has very high demands of its environment, especially with regard to groundwater. Due to the combination of works that had an effect on the groundwater and some extremely dry years, the fen orchid had (almost) completely disappeared. Until last year.

In 2021, thanks to conditions that were favourable to the fen orchid, Natuurpunt noted that the plants had returned and were in bloom. To give this positive development every chance of success, even when periods of drought return, we worked with the Agency for Nature and Forests (Flemish government), the Institute for Nature and Forest Research (also part of the Flemish government) and Natuurpunt to examine how conditions for the fen orchid could be improved.

Accordingly, following a series of preparatory works, the contractor yesterday began constructing an underground groundwater retention screen. From this summer onwards, we are therefore hoping to see even more flowering plants in the area.
